My House-Story
As young newlyweds we had emigrated from busy London and arrived to Melbourne with just enough money to put a deposit on a block of land in a new estate about 30 km from the city centre
When we originally purchased our block , there was only farmland and orchards over the fence and across the road as far as the eye could see.
The original house was a three bedroom and one bathroom triple fronted weatherboard. We had two children quite close together just after we moved in and the surrounding blocks in our court were also being developed with young families.
It was a great family area – the kids would all play out in the court until dark and every Friday we would have a BBQ for all the families. Everyone brought a plate. It was such a great spirit of community.
When our youngest child had started school we were delivered the most surprising news of our lives!
Triplets!!!!
From two to five children in 9 months, the first extension was the addition of three bedrooms and a bathroom therefore our second story arrived – just in time for our homecoming from hospital.
The neighbours in our court took it in turns to provide meals for our family and even made sure we got to the movies one night a month to stay sane.
Once out tribe began to hit the teenage years the second extension in the form of the family/games room was added. This gave us the room to move and we opened the kitchen into this room. We also added the third bathroom as once the kids and their friends were in the house this was a necessity.
To this day our court continues the Friday night gatherings. Even though most of us oldies have moved on, the new generations and cultures have picked up and embraced our tradition.
This makes for a wonderful sense of community. (And the occasional Saturday morning hangover.)
Whoever takes over the loving care of our home has found a haven and we know you will be happy!
