My House-Story
My obsession with Terrace houses began when my oldest sister left our country abode to start University at age 18.
Marnie shared a terrace house in inner Melbourne with four other first year students and I was obsessed with visiting at any given opportunity. The funky black and white chequered floor tiles on the ground floor and the orange shag pile carpet upstairs, was a place of ultimate freedom…. And screamed ‘70’s!
When it came my time to purchase one of these gems with my partner, we went through with a fine tooth comb, gently put the 70’s through the space/time machine and we have lovingly refurbed the interior to a very mid 2000’s liveable – with fresh, clean, tones and eco-friendly, stylish finishes. We have brought in as much natural light as possible which enhances the height of the ceilings and the natural beauty of the floorboards. I’ll talk about the blue exterior in a minute!
We love the long, straight , layout of our home, we love the thick soundproof walls, between rooms and the high ceilings. We have managed in our 7 year tenure to “crack the climate code”. The heating/cooling we have installed, along with the ceiling fans and open fire places ensure you will not only cope with Melbourne weather, but be truly, madly, deeply – comfortable.
We have enjoyed every moment of our upstairs balcony and in summer have witnessed the NYE fireworks surrounded by our nearest and dearest. Our record number of people on the balcony is 75!
Our favourite place in winter would have to be the formal lounge as there is no T.V. in there, just the huge, roaring, fireplace and a sensational sound system. We recommend keeping it that way, for invigorating conversations and games of ‘Monopoly’, ‘Trivial Pursuit’ and more recently, with our tongues firmly planted in our cheeks ‘Cards against Humanity’.
Our blue exterior is best explained in my absolute penchant for that colour – the blue represents voice and as I sing in one of the busiest jazz bands in Australia, I find it helps my tone J.
I trust you enjoyed our House-Story and if you are the lucky purchaser – see if you can break our balcony record!
